On entering the asylum system, people are given the booklet Asylum support: UK rights and expectations. This contains information about British culture and values, health services, public transport, education, law, work, shopping and other topics. For questions about these areas and how they apply to asylum seekers, this booklet is the best starting point. It is available in English, Farsi, Kurdish Sorani and other languages.
In principle, a refugee with leave to remain has the same access to housing, health, education and benefits as a UK citizen. They normally access these in the same way as UK citizens. For example, those who are unemployed and receiving Universal Credit must demonstrate that they are searching for work; those who need housing must join the social housing waiting list or find a private landlord. There is not a separate system for refugees.
Housing
People who are asylum seekers (that is, waiting for their asylum claim to be decided on) are usually provided with basic accommodation by the Home Office. Information about this can be found in A Home Office Guide to Living in Asylum Accommodation. People in asylum accommodation are supported by Migrant Help. Issues with accommodation should normally be raised with them using their 24 hour helpline 0808 8010 503. They can also be contacted via webchat. If you are contacting Migrant Help on behalf of an asylum seeker, you need to provide a consent form.
